Côte d’Ivoire Election Date Set
By Deepthi | April 21, 2008
Rapaport News reports that a date has finally been set for the much-delayed presidential election. Côte d’Ivoire will hold their elections on November 30, 2008. The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Côte d’Ivoire welcomed the news, but peace remains a fragile state of affairs in the country, and the UN still has concerns about diamonds making their way to the global markets illegally.
The UN has been routinely turned away from sites they are supposed to be monitoring for the arms embargo currently in place and has asked the Kimberley Process to send a technical working group into the region to investigate possible abuses.
