Oro Verde – Producer of Fair Trade Gold: World Challenge Competition Finalist
By B. Earth | November 12, 2008
Brilliant Earth is proud to announce that Oro Verde from Chocó, Colombia has been selected as a finalist among more than 700 other global initiatives for the 2008 World Challenge Competition. In working with Oro Verde, we’ve had the opportunity to experience first hand their commitment to creating a socially and environmentally responsible artisanal gold mining standard. The World Challenge is an international competition aimed at rewarding successful small projects and businesses, like Oro Verde, that have shown social and environmental innovation. Organized by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell, this competition is a celebration of the grass roots movement.
Oro Verde is an initiative working to develop standard for fair trade gold. Gold mining continues to destroy large expanses of the globe and to create unsafe and poorly paid working conditions for miners. Oro Verde is unique in that it identifies responsibly mined gold that is humanely produced without harming the environment. The creation of this new standard means miners are paid fair wages, boosting the economy and widespread well-being of the impoverished regions where gold is mined.
Brilliant Earth is ecstatic that Oro Verde’s efforts have drawn international attention, and we are proud to offer the world’s first source of independently certified fair trade gold in our collection of ethical origin jewelry. Check out our 18K Yellow Gold Fair Trade Chocó Pendant.
