PAC Wants Zimbabwe Expelled from Kimberley Process

By B. Earth | March 11, 2009

zimbabwe_miners1International calls to expel Zimbabwe from the UN’s Kimberley Process have become increasingly urgent. The organization Partnership Africa Canada (PAC) has initiated a campaign to expel Zimbabwe from the Kimberley Process as evidence mounts against the government’s ability to control diamond exports.

Smuggled Zimbabwe diamonds are being found in large quantities all over the globe, with revenues often going to support the corrupt Mugabe government’s bloody regime. Furthermore, the Zimbabwe government has recently killed and maimed dozens of desperately impoverished artisanal miners in efforts to retain diamond revenues for its own illegitimate purposes.

PAC accuses the Kimberley Process of turning a blind eye to the human toll of Zimbabwe’s lack of control over its diamond exports. Since the Kimberley Process’s sole purpose is to halt the trade of conflict diamonds, PAC has stated that the human rights violations in Zimbabwe reflect poorly on the Kimberley Process.

Brilliant Earth supports all efforts to prevent unethically sourced diamonds from entering legitimate markets. We only source from carefully monitored mines that practice both social and environmental responsibility.
